Summer camp T-shirts hit the right notes

Wausau Conservatory of Music opens in new window is the premier regional school of musical studies and performance in central Wisconsin. Through private lessons, classes, ensembles, summer camps and free community recitals, its music reaches more than 3,000 community members each year. “The conservatory was founded in 1981 by a local music teacher who saw a need for higher music education in the Wausau community,” said Jenn Williams, administration and operations assistant. “And that need has been filled by leaps and bounds.”

Its team of 22 faculty members offers instruction in 19 instruments, including voice, and its programming reaches children as young as 5 months to adults into their 80s. Early childhood programming includes classes designed to help develop and refine general music knowledge and cognitive skills while also strengthening the bond between children and caregivers. There are music appreciation courses available for all ages to explore elements and pieces of music through a new lens. A variety of general music classes from Ukulele Choir to the Harmony Hive Children’s Choir, are offered as well.

Music camps offer exciting opportunities

Each summer, Wausau Conservatory of Music hosts summer camps for students. Musical theatre vocal camps are available for different age groups, and a string orchestra camp is open to students in fifth through ninth grade. The string orchestra camp carries special significance as orchestra programs are often reduced or cut when school districts face budget challenges. It’s then up to organizations like Wausau Conservatory of Music to help fill the gaps.

The string orchestra camp runs five days and culminates with a community performance of classical pieces and pop hits with an orchestral twist. “Not only do the kids get to show off and be proud of what they’ve accomplished, it creates a free family and community arts experience,” Williams said.

Summer camp T-shirts unite the team

Wausau Conservatory of Music received a one by one grant for summer camp T-shirts opens in new window, so each student could wear one to the performance Matching tees help unite the students and avoid any complications for families who might not be able to provide a requested outfit. “Now there’s equity across the board and they get a cool T-shirt to take home,” Williams said.

“In the past year we’ve really been trying to find new ways to become more a part of the community,” said Brenton Kniess, marketing coordinator. “Being able to have these T-shirts, where the kids are part of one cohesive group and it makes them feel good, it projects the image we want for the community. It doesn’t matter where you come from, what your background is, what financial barriers you may face—this is a school for everybody.”
